Communicators: Cell Phones

Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers started during the 1990s – the Blue Ranger, Billy, created wrist communicators so that they could be in contact no matter where they were.

Star Trek also had a flip-style communicator, as well as a communication device attached to their uniforms to contact the ship’s computer and other members of the team.

While cell phones were available in somewhat recognizable form in the late 90s, during the heyday of the Power Rangers, they were huge, unpopular and extremely expensive for most of the 1990s – and during the days of Star Trek, mobile technology was completely unavailable for consumers.

Today, however, everyone has a cell phone, and they’re tiny – although flip-phones are not as popular as they were in the early days of cellphones, many devices are worn on the ear, and activated with a touch, similar to the Star-trek logo communicator.

How Far Will Technology Advances Go?

Technology has advanced tremendously since these and other devices were first dreamed of on screen and in print. Technology is constantly advancing but it seems like books, films and TV shows have always predicted that the new advances are possible. There are more gadgets due for 2013 and it will be interesting to see the idea behind them and which old Sci-Fi series or author predicted them.
